What is Sports Massage Therapy?
Sports massage therapy uses a combination of treatments to regain or maintain the health of muscle, prevent injury, improve tone and posture, and increase mobility and range of movement.

Although used primarily to aid sporting performance and complement physical fitness, treatment can be beneficial for a wide range of people of all ages and abilities- not just athletes, as it is tailored specifically to the individual. Deep tissue massage combined with stretching and strengthening exercises restores the balance of muscle and soft tissue and can be of benefit to many people suffering common conditions such as-

Back pain

  • RSI( repetitive strain injury)
  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Postural dysfunction
  • Sciatica
  • Tennis/golfers elbow
  • 'Shin Splints'
  • Sprains and strains
  • Whiplash
  • Fibrosis and many many more!

Various techniques are used and differ with each person depending on the individual and may include active and passive stretching, neuromuscular techniques, soft tissue release, deep frictioning, connective tissue massage or ultrasound therapy. Treatments usually last around an hour.
For the sporting client a regular sports massage can help to keep the body in shape during preparation for an event. As well as aiding recovery from training, sports massage can help with performance, improving blood flow and muscle tension and preparing mentally for the big day.

To improve performance and efficiency of the whole body, aim to have a sports massage about 7 days prior to an event and a relaxing post event massage in the week after to aid recovery.
Sports massage is also used by many to maintain muscular alignment and health, and for this purpose is usually carried out every 4-6 weeks.
